A “family” is looking to trade in one of their vehicles to save on gas. Both vehicles are driven approx the same number of miles per year.
#1. One vehicle is a van getting 10 mpg and they are thinking of trading it in on a station wagon that gets 20 mpg, or a difference of 10 mpg.
#2. The other vehicle is a sedan that gets 30 mpg, which they are thinking of trading for a hybrid that gets 50 mpg, a whopping difference of 20 mpg.
Which way should they go to save the most gas?
Converting #1 to gallons per mile: .1 gpm vs .05 gpm — a difference of .05 gpm. Trading would save 2 times the gas.
Converting #2 to gallons per mile: .033 gpm vs .02 gpm — a difference of .013 gpm. Trading would save 1.65 times the gas.
Answer: trade in the van for the station wagon. They will use almost 20% less gas by trading in the van, vs. trading in the sedan.

well here it is another year gone. this time last year i was in texas full speed ahead on a new career path feelin good and lookin even better. i shouldve known that wouldnt last. the fates those arbitrary bitches once again conspired to catch fire to my house of cards, so in classic olah (that’s me in case you dinna know) fashion i cut my losses and made for the hills, actually mountains, of portland. what did i learn from my recent brush with responsible adulthood? well, for one thing success isnt as easy as it sounds even if you put your whole heart and soul into it. either that or ive not figured out what it is im here for. {”here” in the metaphorical metaphysical sense, not here on the interent… i know why im here on the internet: porn.) love will never stay despite any effort to the contrary, and of course the lack of effort just hastens its demise. eventually even the ones you love most will be taken away or will just get tired of trying to keep up. that seems a prosaic notion for someone in thier late 30s to be figuring out i guess, but hey ive always been a late bloomer. also, starting over gets harder as the years go by, maybe some day soon i’ll get it right. like tammy wynette says “i’ll just keep on fallin in love til i get it right” well tammy add to love, everything else and im right there with you. ive spent such a large portion of my life alone that the concept of being “with” someone else in a romantic or non-romantic but somehow exclusive context is both alien and frightening. but then even more frightening is the concept of being that ratty old man who mutters under his breath because there’s no one else he can talk to. fear of action vs fear of inaction, i dont know which will win out in the end. we’ll save that for another year. so, out with the old, in with the new. let’s see if i can make this year more than the sum of the preceeding 36.
ps: if this strikes you as overly pessimistic, narcissistic, whiney, bitchy or just annoying well then i guess you just dont know me.
xoxo

Congrats to techie- and company on the launch of their new website as a home-page for #GayFriends on undernet and skypeIRC networks. The bridge sounds kewl, as does the channel… which I WILL check out… if i can ever motivate mah ass to get off of EFnet for a bit:) Check em out at www.gayfriendsirc.org !
Kudos too to ORcoast for his new weather-station, displayed in all its glory at http://agrisea.com/weather/. The apparent labors that went into actualizing this can only be labors of love… or Way too effing much time on his hands… i prefer to think the former.
In either case and both cases, the sites are refreshing web-presences of something larger behind the site. Oh, and speaking of “larger” there is of course SkinnerJK’s recent channel posting: http://www.ehow.com/how_6677_wash-stallions-geldings.html. (i suggest a more frequent washing!)
Well, two out of three are “august” urls to launch the month of August. :) *cheers!*

How often do you read online messages… both in IRC/Chat and on message boards and see these acronyms that you have no idea what they mean? Many people are clued into things like LOL, ROFL (and variants ROTFL and ROTFLMAO), but what about IAC? IANAL? ISTR? MRD? Even the Acronym Finder doesn’t have the last one as used in chat.
Now, if everything is working, if you move your mouse over any of the acronyms above, you should see “bubble help” with the spelled out version, if you browser supports such things, but MRD may be a little confusing.
Mandy Rice-Davies was famous in Britain for having (supposedly) had an affair with Lord Astor during the “Profumo Affair”. When told that Lord Astor denied even meeting her, she retorted, “Well, he would, wouldn’t he?” In some circles, MRD is used as a response to being told what some third party said meaning that it was said in one’s own self-interest, regardless of whether it is true or not… adjust the pronouns (’he’) as necessary to fit the situation: The cigarette companies have said smoking does not cause cancer? MRD!
Other confusing acronyms? List them here! ![]()

A personal essay in hypertext by Scott Bidstrup
“We cannot accept the view that Amendment 2’s prohibition on specific legal protections does no more than deprive homosexuals of special rights. To the contrary, the amendment imposes a special disability on those persons alone. Homosexuals are forbidden the safeguards that others enjoy or may seek without constraint”
