I don't like to go to gay pride, but I wish I did. I like parties and opportunities to flirt openly on the street. But I don't like crowds or binge-drinking holidays such as St. Patrick's Day and Cinco De Mayo and New Year's. I think Gay Pride events mean more for people who don't have & haven't had much gay in their everyday. I'm glad it's there for them.

Welcome to Portland, Bondage47... and Jack!!!

and nice pics of you both!

Your post bespeaks of a genuine impulse to get somewhat grounded in this sometimes crazy town, and also serves as a a great introduction to You, for portland.

You will prolly get better and more "advice" from Jack than from me, but a few rambling observations follow.

Portland, as you may have already discovered, does not have a cultivated gay hood on the scale of cap hill in seattle, or weho in la... in part because of our smaller scale perhaps... in part due to a greater spirit of independence maybe. I would like to think it is that spirit of independence that lends a less than "down home hospility" that you might also already experienced in town. (But further thoughts on that at another time.)

More trendy than gay, of course is the area of NW 23rd, and priced accordingly. Your situation reminds me a lil of Wonko, who moved here from Texas to Washougal Wa, a little town east of Portland, in search of paradise. He did not find it there, being a bit remote, and due in part to an intollerable domestic situation.... but did, at last report, find something approaching paradise in Alberta Arts Neighborhood in NE Portland..... i looked for a good link but couldn't find one worthy of posting, so please do a quick google if interested. There seem to be some great old houses divided up into studios, affordably rented, and the hood itself beats the burbs, where i presently reside. Naturally, Jack presents something of a challenge, but portland is a big Dog town, and about as bike friendly as any city i can think of in the u.s.

If you are on computer much you prolly already know gaydotcrap (gay.com) portland rooms, and imho there still exist a few humanesque souls that abide there. You are welcome to jump into #gayportland, EFnet, IRC, for a more intimate discussion... provided that someone is home at the time:)

I hope portland proves to be "the place to be" for you, as your post suggests you are a welcome addition to portland!

I was an old friend of Ron's. I'm not sure I'd be remembered but I was Frostbite (Curt) on the old IRC, even before he'd discovered it. I was saddened to hear about his passing, particularly since I'd attempted to look him up recently and wondered why he hadn't had the chance to respond.

At any rate, I wanted to pay my respects and find out if anyone was around to respond to questions regarding Ron and some of our old friends. It's been years since he and I talked but I always regretted not keeping in touch and there are a few mutual friends I'd like to reconnect with. If you can point me in the right direction, I'd appreciate it.

one is fortunate indeed to have silence "pay off" :)

"and everywhere that i keep my silence
no sound returns to me
just endless waves at the end of our days
the sighing of the seas"
Leo Kottke

Thanks for breaking the silence, Leo.... i await your next unveiling.

He Went To Paris Jimmy Buffett

He went to Paris looking for answers
To questions that bothered him so
He was impressive, young and aggressive
Saving the world on his own.
But the warm Summer breezes
The French wines and cheeses
Put his ambition at bay
Summers and Winters
Scattered like splinters
And four or five years slipped away.

He went to England, played the piano
And married an actress named Kim
They had a fine life, she was a good wife
Bore him a young son named Jim.
And all of the answers and all of the questions
He locked in his attic one day
'Cause he liked the quiet clean country living
And twenty more years slipped away.

Well the war took his baby, the bombs killed his lady
And left him with only one eye
His body was battered, his world was shattered
And all he could do was just cry.
While the tears were falling, he was recalling
The answers he never found
So he hopped on a freighter, skidded the ocean
And left England without a sound.

Now he lives in the islands, fishes the pilin's
And drinks his green label each day
He's writing his memoirs and losing his hearing
But he don't care what most people say.
Through eighty-six years of perpetual motion
If he likes you he'll smile then he'll say
Jimmy, some of it's magic, some of it's tragic
But I had a good life all the way.

And he went to Paris looking for answers
To questions that bothered him so.

Clearly, the scope of this subject is limited. Struggling through your disassociated string of thoughts, I wish to lightly respond to the 'freedom of speech' sentiment. I cannot agree w/the unstated assumption to an innate right of 'freedom of speech' because it doesn't exist as it applies to your circumstances. Withal, it would be more correctly and concisely termed 'freedom of expression'; as human beings impart knowledge in more ways than simply verbally. The purpose of 'freedom of speech' is political; we don't wish power systems to subvert their population. Again, this doesn't correlate to you. Try and realize 'freedom of speech' is not unconditional but the general rule; exceptions do and should exist. The typical argument in favour of restrictions is probably the scenario of 'screaming fire in a crowded building.' Also, conceptualize private ownership, I do as I wish; don't like it, don't use it. --CMS

ProtoLeo, such a precious desert flower you are. Thank you for your thoughtful words.

I come here not just to praise you, though, nor to indulge at considerable length my natural inclination toward the dissing of gaydotcrap. But since you kindly opened the door, i am obliged to walk thru at least as far as the foyer.

gaydotcrap is a for-profit company. what is wrong with that, you ask? absolutely nothing, in the context of commerce.... absolutely everything in the context of freedom of speech, the furtherance of community, the exploration of thought. Juxtapose for a moment the feeble efforts of mind it took to construct the cobbled clapboard of profit that is gaydotcrap, with the genius that is pure IRC and the beauty that is EFnet... beauty and genius lent freely by fine minds for the love of creativity and to the benefit of the genuinely playful. Compare if you will the elegance of a single line of eggdrop code with all the lurid commercial characters leering out of the gaydotcrap website. And weep.

Mediocrity and homogeneity are the backbone and life-blood of for-profit beasts like gaydotcrap... spineless, lifeless, bloodsucking creature that it is. Those who choose to willingly feed the vile monster are the subject of another discussion. (insert evil smiley face)

Keep fighting the good fight, ProtoLeo!
